Officials,
We’re over halfway through the season and I hope all is going well for you. Recently, the USL Certified Trainers received the 4th FAQ issued by the NFHS which helps clarify rules and mechanics. The direct links are also at the bottom of this message. Please read through these FAQs, as they will clear up a number of issues I have heard discussed on the field this season.
In addition, I would like to remind everyone of the proper mechanics as follows:
COUNTS in 3-man: The single-side official is to take the the 20- and 10-second counts. Experienced officials who are diverging from this — please understand that we are trying to promote consistency in our methods. Newer officials are getting confused and they have enough to deal with already.
FACEOFFS in 2- and 3-man: Two issues are showing up time and again. First, FO officials are backing away before they say “SET”. This is incorrect, and may cause FO players to flinch. The correct method, after adjusting the players’ sticks, is to put the ball in place and put your hand across both stick heads WHILE SAYING “SET”. Then back out and blow your whistle. Second, your whistle should be in your mouth BEFORE you say “set”. The reasoning is that the player on the FO officials’ side of the midline can see when you raise your hand, and thus gain an advantage.
