In light of the global health concerns relative to the novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, the Indiana Lacrosse Officials Association has been in contact with the Indiana High School Lacrosse Association, relative to interaction with student athletes. Discussions are also taking place with the Indiana Youth Lacrosse Association.
Many collegiate and professional sports teams are beginning to eliminate hand-shaking and the IHSLA is evaluating their options on alternate exchange of sporting customs and courtesies. We will keep you posted on the direction they take, but I encourage you to consider alternatives to minimize contact. Specifically, the “elbow bump” has been widely-accepted as an alternate and it’s my recommendation we take this course of action at this time. Even a simple nod of respect, courtesy and acknowledgement may be sufficient.
There is no reason to believe any of us may be at risk by engaging in lacrosse officiating activities, but feel it is prudent and in our best interest to use this alternative to the handshake. Again, I will advise you on any specifics from our leagues, but know that we support you and encourage you to begin this action immediately.
Thank you, and please let me know of any questions you may have.
